Scarifying
An even better way to spring clean the lawn is to scarify it. This is best done when the grass has started growing properly (when you have cut it once or twice), but before the ground has become too dry and hard. Do not let the scarifier work too deep. Just scarify the surface. You will be as surprised every year to see how much dry and dead material is pulled up from the lawn. Scarifying is beneficial in several ways. You pull up moss and you also pull up dead material lying on the surface, and above all you let air get at the roots. If you have air at the surface level, moss does not thrive and you make the grass more competitive against moss and weeds. Fertilize the lawn a couple of weeks before scarifying. When you have scarified and cleaned up it is a good opportunity to sow grass seed where it is needed.
